opere, idee, progetti, persone dalla collezione del madre
Castello Macchiaroli, Teggiano, 2019/2020

Works, ideas, projects, people from the Madre collection was curated by Andrea Viliani and Silvia Salvati on the occasion of the Summer Universiade Naples 2019 and Matera European Capital of Culture 2019.

From the press release:

(…) The second floor houses the installation by Pietro Costa (Sant'Arsenio, 1960) entitled Alla luce di Tutto, a project that includes two connected projects, which the artist has developed over the course of almost two decades: donor project and light structures.

donor project was started in 2000 as an extension of the bloodworks started in 1990.

While the bloodworks project involved the use of the artist's blood as a means of making art and questioning the concept of the self-portrait and the artist's identity, the donor project uses the blood of donor subjects and deals with the larger genre of portraiture and collective identity.

Related works executed in 2018 are a precise biological record of each subject and genetically contain a "true" or "exact" copy of him/her/them at the time of blood donation to the project, as well as environmental conditions of time and space in which each work was created.

Within the air pockets scattered in mylar veils that contain the blood are stored samples of the particles present in the air at a given location at the time the veils were made, similar to the air trapped in ancient glaciers that holds environmental secrets of the era in which the glacier was formed.

In this sense the donor project extends the classical tradition of portraiture, representation and social identity into the new millennium, the age of DNA manipulation.

light structures is instead an investigation of line, space, light and color. These four elements connect the tradition of image-making (painting and drawing) and object-making (sculpture) which dates back to the first signs traced on the walls, in the secret darkness of caves, at the beginning of our human civilization, more than 50,000 years ago.

The title light structures underlines that it is light that gives every object a visual form, and that this is also a means of defining and measuring space such as the starlight we see at night, a measure of distance and time of the physical space of the universe. (…)
