Siamosiete, 2007

Siamosiete…comprises of 7 luminous containers, situated among the trees in the garden of the Certosino Monks at the Certosa di San Lorenzo (ca. 1320′s), where they walked and meditated for hundreds of years. The Certosa was (and still is) a walled in city within a city, where the monks lived in a meditative environment, worshiped, cultivated fields and vineyards and had very little interaction with the outside.

The containers converse with each other and with the visitors through their “on” and “off” of light revealing their contents only when one looks up close, inside each container which holds a single word, six (6) in all…. SIAMO (we are)… SIETE (you are)… TUTTI (all)… LADRI (thieves)… BUGIARDI (liars)… VITTIME (victims)…the last container has only a mirror reflecting the face of the viewer.

The choice of everyday objects, white plastic garbage cans, was made to underscore the cross over between the church, politics and organized crime in contemporary Italian culture and further contrast the sacred and the profane in art, politics, religion and in our daily moral choices.
